What does it mean for AI to cite your website?

How AI systems reference sources

When an AI model generates an answer to a user's question, it can include links or mentions of the websites it drew information from. This is citation—the AI telling users "I found this information at yoursite.com." Not all AI systems do this equally. Some, like Claude or ChatGPT with browsing, will cite sources in their responses. Others train on data but don't link back during generation.

Citation matters because it drives traffic. A user sees your domain recommended by an AI, clicks through, and lands on your content. It also builds authority—being cited by AI systems signals to both users and search algorithms that your information is trusted.

Why it's different from traditional search

Traditional search engines index pages and rank them. AI systems typically generate text from training data or live web results, then attribute that information back to sources. The citation process is newer and less standardized than search ranking, so the rules are still being written.

Not every AI system will cite you, and citation practices vary by tool and version. Understanding this gap helps you plan realistic outreach.
