What's the difference between being in training data and being cited?

Training data inclusion
When your content is in an AI's training data, the model has learned patterns and information from your writing. It can generate text influenced by your ideas, style, or facts—but without necessarily crediting you.
Example: An AI trained on thousands of articles about solar panels may produce an answer about photovoltaic efficiency informed by your detailed post, but your site name never appears in the user's response.
Active citation in responses
Citation happens at response time, when the AI explicitly tells the user "this information comes from yoursite.com." This usually requires the system to:
- Have access to live web results (not just training data)
- Be designed to include source attribution
- Match user queries to relevant sources in real-time
Why this matters for your strategy
Being in training data is good for long-term influence on how AI systems understand your topic. But citation drives immediate, measurable traffic. Some AI systems do both—train on broad data and cite specific sources when answering—while others do only one or neither. Your presence strategy should account for both pathways.
