Should I worry about AI systems using my content without permission?

Current legal status
Most AI companies argue that training on publicly available web content falls under fair use or fair dealing in copyright law. This is actively disputed through lawsuits, but as of now, there is no universal legal prohibition on scraping and training.
Some jurisdictions (notably the EU) are developing regulations that may require AI companies to seek permission or provide compensation. Laws are still being written, not finalized.
What you can actually do
- Use robots.txt to disallow specific scrapers
- Request opt-out from individual AI companies (some honor these requests)
- Include a clear terms-of-use or license statement on your site
- Monitor your content's use through regular searches in AI systems
The practical reality
If your content is publicly accessible on the web, you cannot guarantee it won't be used in AI training. Focusing only on blocking AI systems means missing opportunities for traffic through citation. A balanced approach: make your site visible to discovery while opting out only if that aligns with your values or business model.
